In this role as a Hull Outfit Engineer, you will be working with the team providing Hull Outfit engineering support operating under the BIW Business Operating System (BOS). This group is responsible for the Lead Yard Services and DDGX Hull Outfit Engineering (Deck Systems, Closures, Insulation, Furniture, Stowages, and many other components) used to complete some of the most complex warships built in the world.

Key Responsibilities

Safety:

  • Champion and enforce BIW safety policies and procedures, including "Design for Safety".
  • \n
  • Promote a culture of proactive safety awareness and accountability across the team.
  • \n
  • Ensure safe workplace conditions and compliance with government and company safety standards.
  • \n

Continuous Improvement:
    \n
  • Champion BOS principles and productivity enhancements.
  • \n
  • Identify and eliminate non-value-added activities; lead implementation of process improvements.
  • \n
  • Leverage A3 problem-solving and other structured improvement tools.
  • \n
  • Contribute to the Operational Performance Improvement Plan (OPIP).
  • \n

Operational Support
    \n
  • Report progress and status of assigned work at Departmental White Boards, as required.
  • \n
  • Support maintenance of EVMS (Earned Value Management System) for scheduled work.
  • \n
  • Participate in employee performance evaluation process.
  • \n
  • Support completing Plan of the Week (POW) work items.
  • \n

Support Team in Following Topics:
    \n
  • Engineering analyses as part of: Materials Evaluation, Strength, Mechanical Function; System Analysis/Trade-Off Analysis; Design Development; Calculations; Design Drawing/Manual/Product Review; Procurement Support; Production Support; Operational and Test.
  • \n
  • Support all associated with problem solving in hull outfit disciplines including: General Arrangements; Habitability, Food Service, Personnel Support Spaces; Joiner Work, Insulation, Deck Covering; Access, Doors, Hatches, Scuttles; Ladders, Life Rails, Hull Fittings, Rigging; Store/Cargo/Vehicle Handling, and Stowage; Anchor Handling, Mooring, and Towing; UNREP; Boat Handling and Stowage, Lifesaving Equipment; Aviation Facilities; Hull Outfit Foundations/Method Mounts; Deck Machinery; Hull Castings.

  • Analyze requirements and provide guidance to design for compliance in alignment with associated processes.
  • \n
  • Analyze ship and equipment purchase specification requirements.
  • \n
  • Manage projects, identify and resolve issues surrounding tasks.
  • \n
  • Write reports and correspondence.
  • \n
  • Travel to suppliers, customers, or other worksites.
  • \n
  • Participate in or lead technical interchanges on issues with customers such as U. S. Navy (NAVSEA and Supervisor of Shipbuilding), Suppliers, Production workers and supervisors.

Required/Preferred Education/Training

    \n
  • Bachelor's Degree in Naval Architecture, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Marine Engineering required.
  • \n
  • Engineer I: 0-1 years' experience preferred.
  • \n
  • Engineer II: 1-2 Years' experience required.
  • \n

Required/Preferred Experience

    \n
  • Aptitude for problem solving.
  • \n
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering tools and methods relating to Naval Architecture and Hull Outfit.
  • \n
  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office tools.
  • \n
  • Ability to develop trade studies, optimizations and hull outfit designs from requirements alone.
  • \n
  • Strong oral and written communication skills required.
  • \n
  • Work experience in the maritime industry or time at sea preferred.
  • \n
  • Willingness to work onboard ship, pier side or at sea, possibly in confined spaces, as well as in office environment.
  • \n
